Takauchi, Trinkle and Bull Dogs rally past Batesville 6-3 in baseball

                COLUMBUS, Ind. – Junior Homare Takauchi went 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a steal of home on Tuesday (April 9), leading the Columbus North baseball team to a 6-3 victory over Batesville at Southside Elementary School.

                Junior Grant Trinkle was 2-of-4, including a two-run go-ahead double, as the Bull Dogs improved to 6-1. Sophomore Blake Stevens also singled in a run, and sophomore Kyler McIntosh provided an RBI on a sacrifice fly.

                Trailing 3-0 after one inning, Columbus North scored once in the second, once in the third and twice in the fourth to take the lead.

                McIntosh and Harmon each was hit by a pitch in the second inning, and Stevens singled McIntosh home. In the third inning, Takauchi doubled to left field, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on McIntosh’s sacrifice fly.

                McDaniel and Stevens each was hit by a pitch in the fourth inning, and both runners advanced on a double steal. Trinkle then followed with a two-run double to left field to give the hosts a 4-3 lead.

                The Bull Dogs extended their advantage with two more runs in the sixth inning. Trinkle opened the rally with a two-out single. Takauchi followed with a single, Trinkle coming all the way around to score and Takauchi moving to second on the throw to the plate. Takauchi advanced to third on a Batesville error, and he stole home with junior Adam Chapman at the plate.

                Batesville combined two hits, two hit batsman, a wild pitch and a Columbus North error to take a 3-0 lead in the top of the first. But Harmon and senior Jakob Meyer combined to allow just two hits over the final six innings as the Bull Dogs came from behind to prevail.

                Harmon pitched five innings and allowed four hits while striking out two. Meyer closed by striking out three over the final two innings.

                The Columbus North C Team opened their season on Tuesday, dropping a 9-3 decision at Lawrence North. Freshmen Sam King and Trevin Johnson each doubled, while sophomore Gage Bayne pitched 4.2 innings of three-hit ball before tiring.

                Columbus North returns to action at 5:30 p.m. Thursday (April 11) when it hosts Shelbyville in varsity and JV games at the Southside complete. The Bull Dogs’ C Team is back on the field at 10 a.m. Saturday (April 13) when it host Bloomington South in a doubleheader.


Varsity schedule notes

                The CN-Bloomington North varsity baseball game from April 4 at Bloomington North that was suspended will be resumed at 6 p.m. next Wednesday (April 17). The Bull Dogs lead 3-1 with one out in the top of the seventh inning. The game will restart from the point of interruption.

                Columbus North has added a varsity-only baseball game at 6 p.m. May 14 at home against Hamilton Southeastern.
