BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Junior Homare Takauchi scored two runs and sophomore Austin Bode had two hits as the Columbus North baseball team closed out a 3-1 victory at Bloomington North on Wednesday (April 17) in a game that had begun on April 4.
The Bull Dogs improved to 10-3 for the season and captured its Conference Indiana opener. The Cougars fell to 2-1 in league games.
Columbus North led 3-1 with one out in the top of the seventh inning at Bloomington North when the game was suspended April 4 because of rain.
Bode was the first batter when play resumed Thursday. Bode flew out and junior Casper Clark struck out to end the inning.
In the bottom of the seventh, CN junior Grant Trinkle took the mound and earned a save with a 1-2-3 inning. Trinkle recorded a strikeout, a fly out and a ground out to end the game.
Back on April 4, the Bull Dogs tallied single runs in the first, third and fifth innings to take the lead.
Takauchi was hit by pitch in the first inning, advanced to third on a Bode single by Bode and scored on a Clark single.
In the third inning, Bode reached base on a fielder’s choice and eventually scored on a passed ball.
Takauchi tallied CN’s third run in the fifth inning, scoring when the Cougars made an errant throw on an attempted squeeze play.
Senior Jakob Meyer was the winning pitcher, allowed one run on five hits while striking out nine and walking one in six innings. Takauchi, Clark, junior Adam Chapman and sophomore Reese Harmon each had one hit for the Bull Dogs.
Senior Harry Deliyannis tallied three hits, while senior Ben Freel and senior Riley Gallagher each notched one hit for the Cougars.
Columbus North returns to action at 5:30 p.m. Thursday (April 18) when it visits Jennings County for a varsity-only game.
