Bode's home run, Meyer's pitching lift Columbus North baseball to 5-2 win over Cathedral

COLUMBUS, Ind. – Sophomore Austin Bode hit a three-run home run and senior Jakob Meyer gave up just one run over six innings Friday evening (April 26), leading the Columbus North baseball team to a 5-2 victory over Cathedral at Southside Elementary School.

Bode’s blast to right field came in the fourth inning and drove home juniors Grant Trinkle and Homare Takauchi, who had opened in the inning with a walk and single. CN added single runs in the second and fifth innings, while Meyer struck out nine while yielding four hits and one walk as the Bull Dogs improved to 13-3. Trinkle pitched the seventh inning to pick up a save.

Junior Casper Clark, sophomore Blake Huffman and senior Parker Maddox each added a single for Columbus North. Cole Vassilo paced the Irish with a double and a single.

Cathedral opened the scoring when Camden Jordan singled, moved to third on Vassilo’s double and came home on a passed ball.

The Bull Dogs tied the game in the second inning when Huffman singled and came all the way around when Maddox reached on an errors.

Bode broke the deadlock with his three-run dinger, and CN added to its lead in the fifth inning when Trinkle walked, moved to third on an errant pickoff attempt and scored on a Takauchi sacrifice fly.

Cathedral managed one run and loaded the bases in the seventh, but Trinkle struck out the side to end the game.

At the C Team level, the Bull Dogs’ scheduled game at Seymour was canceled.

The Columbus North varsity returns to action with two home games on Saturday (April 27) – at 10 a.m. against Jeffersonville and at 3 p.m. against Terre Haute North.

The C Team returns to action at 5 p.m. Monday (April 29) when it hosts Whiteland at the Southside complex.
