COLUMBUS, Ind. – Junior Casper Clark hurled a one-hit shutout Saturday afternoon (April 27) to lead the Columbus North baseball team to a 5-0 victory over Terre Haute North in a Conference Indiana game at Southside Elementary School.
Sophomore Austin Bode doubled twice, scored twice and drove home one run for the Bull Dogs, who improved to 14-4 overall and 3-0 in CI contests. Sophomore Kyler McIntosh added two singles, while junior Grant Trinkle, junior Homare Takauchi, senior Parker Maddox, sophomore Blake Huffman and sophomore Reese Harmon each had one single.
Clark was overpowering on the mound, allowing just four base runners while striking out 12 and walking none. Senior Will Kelly had the lone hit on a first-inning single for the Patriots (5-7, 1-2).
Trinkle gave Columbus North a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when he singled, stole second base, moved to third on an error and scored on a wild pitch.
In the second inning, Huffman singled, stole second, moved to third on an error and scored on a Harmon single.
Bode doubled to right field to open the third inning. He moved to third on a Maddox ground out and scored on a sacrifice fly by junior Adam Chapman.
CN scored twice in the fifth inning. Takauchi led off with a single, and Bode followed with an RBI double. A Maddox single moved Bode to third base, and Bode scored on Chapman’s second sacrifice fly of the game.
Earlier Saturday, senior Drew Taylor walked with the bases loaded in the top of the seventh inning to force in the decisive run as Jeffersonville edged the Bull Dogs 2-1.
The visiting Red Devils struck first in the pitchers’ duel with a run in the sixth inning when Taylor doubled, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly by senior Jack Ellis. Columbus North drew even in the bottom of the inning when Trinkle singled, stole second, moved to third on a ground out and scored on a fielder’s choice.
The Bull Dogs had a chance in the bottom of the seventh inning when Harmon reached on an error, Huffman was hit by a pitch and McIntosh provided an infield single. However, Trinkle followed with a line drive to second base to end the game.
Junior Conner Christopher pitched a complete game for Jeffersonville, allowing one run on four hits with five strikeouts and one walk. Maddox was charged with the loss for CN, yielding two runs on one hit with 12 strikeouts and five walks.
McIntosh had two hits, while Trinkle and Clark each had one hit for the Bull Dogs. Taylor had the lone hit for the Red Devils.
Jeffersonville improved to 12-5 with a 3-0 victory over Terre Haute North in the second of three games of the day.
Columbus North returns to action at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday (April 30) when it visits Noblesville.
