TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Junior Grant Trinkle went 2-for-3 and provided a two-run seventh-inning single on Saturday (May 11), helping the Columbus North baseball team knock off Terre Haute South 5-1 in the first game of a doubleheader.
The triumph clinched the 2019 Conference Indiana championship at 5-0 for the Bull Dogs. This is the fourth CI baseball title for Columbus North, joining previous crowns in 2005, 2012 and 2015. The conference championship is the 21st in Columbus High/Columbus North program history with 17 earlier South Central Conference crowns that include three from World War II years where boys played softball instead of baseball.
Sophomore Reese Harmon pitched a no-hitter while junior Casper Clark went 4-for-4 with a double and two RBIs as Columbus North won the second game 9-0. The second game was considered a non-conference game.
In the opener, sophomore Austin Bode also went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and sophomore Kyler McIntosh was 1-for-3 while senior pitcher Jakob Meyer picked up the victory. Meyer allowed one run on two hits with eight strikeouts and four walks in six innings. Clark finished the game on the mound, striking out two with no hits and no walks in one inning.
Columbus North took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Trinkle singled, stole second, moved to third on a passed ball and scored on a Bode single. The host Braves tied the game in the third when sophomore Kade Kline scored on a wild throw, but the Bull Dogs took the lead for good in the fifth when Harmon scored on a bases-loaded wild pitch.
Trinkle drove home senior Devon Rodgers and Harmon to make it 4-1 in the seventh, and Bode drove in McIntosh later in the inning to complete the scoring.
Senior Cole Whitlock and senior Brayton Reed had one hit apiece for Terre Haute South (10-10, 1-4). Whitlock took the loss on the mound, giving up five runs on four hits with six strikeouts and three walks in 6.1 innings.
In the second game, junior Adam Chapman went 3-for-4 with a triple and three RBIs, junior Homare Takauchi went 3-for-4 with two doubles, Bode went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs, and McIntosh went 1-for-4 in support of Clark’s hitting and Harmon’s pitching gem.
Harmon threw only 69 pitches and let his fielders do the work for him, striking out just one and issuing three walks – two in the third inning and one in the sixth. Harmon allowed just one base runner past second base.
Clark’s single drove in the Trinkle in the top of the first with the only run Harmon would need. Trinkle drew a walk to open the game and moved to second on a ground out.
The Bull Dogs added three runs in the third inning when Trinkle scored on a Bode sacrifice fly and Chapman singled in Takauchi and Clark. Takauchi and Bode produced back-to-back doubles for another run in the fifth inning, and CN produced four more runs in the seventh inning when Bode singled home Takauchi, Clark doubled in Rodgers, Chapman tripled in Clark and Chapman scored on an error.
Columbus North, now 18-5 overall, returns to action at 6 p.m. Monday (May 13) when it visits Fishers. The Bull Dogs follow by hosting Hamilton Southeastern at 6 p.m. Tuesday (May 14) at Southside Elementary School. The game against HSE is Senior Day; Meyer, Rodgers and classmates Parker Maddox and Konner Stahl will be recognized in a program that day.
