Columbus North baseball falls to SB St. Joseph, tops Avon in Indy Invitational

INDIANAPOLIS – Junior Homare Takauchi went 4-for-4 with three RBIs and Columbus North exploded for a nine-run sixth inning Saturday (May 18) en route to posting a 16-7 victory over Avon in the Indy Invitational at North Central.

Sophomore Austin Bode doubled twice with four RBIs and Grant Trinkle homered, singled and drove home three runs as the Bull Dogs went 1-1 for the day and moved their season record to 20-7. Junior Casper Clark added a double, while junior Adam Chapman, sophomore Kyler McIntosh, freshman Will Baker, senior Jakob Meyer and sophomore Blake Huffman each added a single.

Senior Parker Maddox gave up six runs on six hits with six strikeouts and three walks in 5.1 innings to pick up the victory. Baker pitched two-thirds of an inning, and Takauchi hurled a scoreless seventh to close the game.

Sophomore Henry Hesson went 2-for-3 with a double for Avon, which dropped to 14-12 and played North Central in a later game. Junior Kyren Power ripped a sixth-inning grand slam, while junior Cam Melvin and junior Nate Sidwell also had home runs for the Orioles.

Sidwell started on the mound and took the loss by allowing seven runs over 4.2 innings.

Avon led 2-0 after two innings when Columbus North countered with three runs on a two-out rally in the top of the third. Trinkle singled, Takauchi walked and Bode followed with a double to bring both runners home. Clark then doubled to left to bring in Bode.

Sidwell’s home run tied the game in the bottom of the third, but the Bull Dogs went ahead for good with four runs in the fourth.

Sophomore Reese Harmon opened the burst with a one-out walk. After a line out, McIntosh reached on a bunt single and Trinkle provided a three-run home run to left field. Takauchi then singled, and scored from first on a Bode double to right field.

In the sixth, sophomore Hayden McDaniel was hit by a pitch, Trinkle walked and Takauchi followed with an RBI single. Trinkle, Takauchi and Bode each scored on different errors, Baker singled and senior Konner Stahl walked to load the bases. Senior Devon Rodgers, junior Pedro Munoz and sophomore Jacob Bailey each walked with the bases loaded, and Takauchi capped the inning with a two-RBI single.

Junior Tyce Ferrell opened the bottom of the sixth with a double and two walks loaded the bases. Power greeted Baker with a grand slam to left field, but Baker did not allow any more runs. Takauchi allowed two Avon runners to open the seventh, but he struck out the next batter and induced a double play to end the game.

In CN’s opening game, Nick Dolniak doubled twice and Patrick Farrisee had two singles to lead South Bend St. Joseph to a 4-2 triumph. A.J. Klimek pitched a two-hit complete game to earn the decision. He struck out six and walked four as the Indians improved to 18-3.

Trinkle and McIntosh had the only hits for Columbus North. Meyer took the loss on the mound.

Dolniak and Brady Gumpf produced back-to-back doubles for one run, and Gumpf ultimate scored on an error for a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Gumpf reached on an error in the third inning and scored on a double by Joe Rotkis to make it 3-0.

Trinkle reached on a fielder’s choice, moved to second on error, advanced to third on a ground out and then stole home to put the Bull Dogs on the scoreboard in the fifth inning. CN cut its deficit to 3-2 in the sixth when Maddox reached second on an error and scored when sophomore Reese Harmon reached on an error.

The Indians added an insurance run in the seventh when Caleb Hlade singled, moved to second on a wild pitch, moved to third on a Farrisee single and scored when Gumpf reached on an error.

Trinkle singled and Takauchi drew a walk with one out in the bottom of the seventh to give Columbus North a chance, but Bode grounded out and Clark flied out to end the game.

North Central beat St. Joseph 5-4 in nine innings earlier in the day.

Columbus North returns to action at 5:30 p.m. Monday (May 20) when it visits Roncalli in a makeup game of an earlier rainout. The Bull Dogs open sectional play about 8 p.m. Friday (May 24) when it faces East Central in the second semifinal of the East Central Sectional.
