Trinkle helps Columbus North baseball edge Roncalli 5-4 in eight innings

INDIANAPOLIS – Junior Grant Trinkle doubled and scored the winning run in the eighth inning Monday evening (May 20), helping the Columbus North baseball team post a 5-4 victory at Roncalli.

Sophomore Blake Huffman went 3-for-3 with three RBIs and junior Adam Chapman pitched an inning of scoreless relief to pick up the decision for the Bull Dogs, who completed their regular season at 21-7. Senior Devon Rodgers went 2-for-2, while Trinkle finished 2-for-3 and junior Homare Takauchi went 2-for-4.

Senior Parker Maddox, Chapman and sophomore Kyler McIntosh also had hits for Columbus North.

Junior Casper Clark started on the mound, giving up two runs on two hits with five strikeouts and one walk in six innings. McIntosh gave up two runs on three hits in one inning, while Chapman allowed no hits and stuck out two in his one inning of work.

Junior Alex Stroud double, while junior Will Schoettle, freshman Brayden Speziale, senior Nathan Gramman and sophomore Dominic Brown each singled for the Rebels (17-8).

Junior Sammy Baugh allowed four runs on seven hits with one strikeout and five walks in 6.1 innings pitches. Senior Max Lundy absorbed the loss after he allowed one run on five hits with two walks in 1.2 innings.

Columbus North took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Trinkle singled, stole second, moved to third on a ground out and scored on a Maddox single.

Roncalli tied the game in the fourth when senior Tommy Hansen was hit by a pitch, moved to third on a Brown single and scored on a balk. The Rebels went ahead in the fifth when sophomore John Troxell reached on an error, moved to third on a Spiezale single and scored on a Gramman ground out.

The Bull Dogs went ahead 4-2 with three runs in the top of the seventh. Takauchi and McIntosh each provided one-out singles. Rodgers walked to load the bases, and Huffman followed with a hit to right field to bring all three runners home.

However, Roncalli countered with two runs in the bottom of the frame to force extra innings. Troxell reached on a fielder’s choice, Schoettle singled, Gramman singled in Troxell, and Schoettle scored when senior Brian Keeney reached on an error.

In the top of the eighth, Trinkle provided a one-out double to left field. He moved to third on a Takauchi single and scored on a McIntosh groundout.

Chapman set the Rebels down in order in the bottom of the eighth – strikeout, strikeout and ground out.

Columbus North returns to action at about 8 p.m. Friday (May 24) when it faces East Central in the semifinal round of the East Central Sectional. If the Bull Dogs win that game, they advance to the sectional final at 7 p.m. Monday (May 27).
