Columbus North baseball routs East Central 13-0, to face Columbus East in sectional final on Monday

ST. LEON, Ind. – Junior Grant Trinkle went 2-for-3 with a triple and senior Parker Maddox and junior Casper Clark combined on a five-inning no-hitter Friday evening (May 24), leading the Columbus North baseball team to a 13-0 victory over East Central in the semifinals of the East Central Sectional.

Trinkle also scored three times and added an RBI as the Bull Dogs (22-7) earned a date in the sectional final at 6 p.m. Monday (May 27) against Columbus East (21-4), a 2-1 winner over Bloomington South in the first semifinal.

Senior Devon Rodgers also tripled and sophomore Reese Harmon doubled for CN, while junior Homare Takauchi, sophomore Austin Bode, junior Adam Chapman and sophomore Kyler McIntosh all had singles. The Bull Dogs also took advantage of seven walks, including three to Takauchi and two to sophomore Blake Huffman, and four East Central errors in rolling to the triumph.

Maddox, meanwhile, struck out four and walked just one in facing just 13 batters over the first four innings. Clark pitched the fifth, striking out the side on 11 pitches.

East Central saw its season end at 10-12.

Columbus North tallied all the runs it would need in the top of the first inning, scoring five times with a Harmon two-run double and a Rodgers’ RBI triple highlighting the frame.

The Bull Dogs added two runs in the second, two more in the third and four in the fourth inning to complete their scoring. Chapman had an RBI single in the second inning. CN scored on a wild pitch and dropped third strike in the third inning. A Rodgers’ ground out, another wild pitch, a Trinkle triple and a Takauchi single all accounted for runs in the fourth.

Junior Mitch Behrle pitched two-thirds of an inning and absorbed the setback for the Trojans.

In the other semifinal, junior Cole Gilley singled with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift Columbus East over Bloomington South. Senior Julian Greenwell produced an RBI double in the bottom of the first for the Olympians’ other run. The Panthers completed their season at 13-11.
