Bull Dogs place fifth in boys golf State Finals; Kiel ties for 15th place individually

                CARMEL, Ind. – Senior Henry Kiel fired a 1-over-par 73 on Wednesday (June 12) for a two-round total of 150, helping the Columbus North boys golf team move forward for a fifth-place finish in the IHSAA State Finals.

                Senior Drew Smith and freshman Luke Schneider each shot a second-round 76, while sophomore Jacob Niedbalski carded a second-round 84 as the Bull Dogs totaled 309 as a team for Day 2. That figure, combined with their opening-round 321, gave them a 630 aggregate over the nearly 7,000-yard layout at Prairie View Golf Club.

                Sophomore Luke VanDeventer had an 88 on Wednesday to complete the CN lineup. Senior Jackson Kerber had shot an 85 in the first round in the Bull Dogs’ fifth spot.

                Individually, Kiel tied for 15th place with a two-round 77-73 – 150, while Smith was 30th with a 79-76 – 155. Schneider tied for 46th place with an 83-76 – 159, and Niedbalski tied for 72nd place with an 82-84 – 166.

                Carmel, led by individual medalist Nick Dentino, claimed the team championship with a 299-289 – 588 total. Noblesville and Center Grove each had a 605, and Guerin Catholic placed fourth with a 617. Columbus North and Castle shared fifth place with 630s followed by Penn and Floyd Central both at 634, Fort Wayne Dwenger at 637 and Hamilton Southeastern at 644.

                Dentino fired a 70-70 – 140 to share the lead after 36 holes with Noblesville’s Clay Merchent, who had a 72-68 – 140. Dentino then birdied the first playoff hole, No. 18, to claim the individual title.

                Junior Luke Prall, junior Clay Stirsman, senior Cole Harris and senior Jack Crawford rounded out the lineup as the Greyhounds successfully captured the team title for the second straight season and a record seventh time overall. Prall shot a 74-72 –146, while Stirsman tallied a 74-76 – 150. Harris posted an 81-71 – 152, and Crawford shot an 82-76 – 158.

                Brebeuf Jesuit sophomore Drew Wrightson placed third individually with a 72-71 – 143. Castle junior Adam Bratton, at 72-73 –145, and Harrison (West Lafayette) junior Nic Hofman, at 75-70 – 145, shared fourth place.

                Dentino, a senior, also was named winner of the IHSAA’s Fred A. Keesling Mental Attitude Award. He totaled a 3.58 grade-point average, plans to study business at Purdue and play golf for the Boilermakers.
