CN's Anderson, Thompson honored as Indiana athletes of the year in girls golf, gymnastics

INDIANAPOLIS – Columbus North senior Holly Anderson was honored as Indiana’s athlete of the year in girls golf and Bull Dogs junior Claire Thompson was recognized as athlete of the year in gymnastics on Thursday (April 27) at the Indiana Sports Awards ceremony hosted by The Indianapolis Star.

Athletes were recognized for the 2016-17 academic year.

Anderson was the IHSAA individual state champion last fall, posting a 75-71—146 over two rounds at Prairie View Golf Club in Carmel. She became Columbus North’s first individual state champion in girls golf and her second-round 71 tied for the 23rd-best single round in IHSAA State Finals history.

Anderson, a Ball-State recruit, shared medalist honors with teammate Alexandra Munnicha with 75s in the Greensburg Sectional. Anderson also took medalist honors in the Lapel Regional with a 73.

Thompson was cited as the gymnast of the year for the second consecutive year.

This year, Thompson was the individual champion on balance beam, tied for third on uneven parallel bars and was second in the all-around with a score of 38.075 at the IHSAA state meet. As a sophomore, Thompson was state champion on bars, beam and the all-around.

Columbus North senior Ashley Holliday joined Thompson as a finalist this year for athlete of the year in gymnastics. Holliday won the vault, tied for seventh on bars, placed third in the all-around and was this year’s IHSAA Mental Attitude Award winner.
