Kim shoots school-record 32 as Columbus North girls golf tops Batesville 155-201

BATESVILLE, Ind. – Senior Danbi Kim tied a school record with a sizzling 3-under-par 32 on Tuesday (Aug. 15), leading the Columbus North girls golf team to a 155-203 victory over Batesville at Hillcrest Country Club.

Junior Alexandria Munnicha contributed a 39 and senior Julia Luken provided a 41 for the Bull Dogs, who improved to 3-0 in dual meets. Senior Molly Donnell completed CN’s top four with a 43, and sophomore Annie Anderson rounded out the lineup with a 47.

Columbus North coach Scott Seavers noted that Kim’s 32 matched a program best for a nine-hole round – a score first set last year when then-senior Aubrey Smith fired a 32 against Southport at Southern Dunes Golf Course.

“The course is fairly short, but it really was my short game that came through,” said Kim, who birdied hole Nos. 2, 3, 6 and 9 while bogeying No. 8. “I saved par a couple of times, and those made the round.”

One of those saves came on No. 4, where Kim shot the ball over the green and up against a tree. Still, she chipped the ball on the green and then made the putt for par.

Another memorable hole was No. 6.

“I drove to the green, then two-putted for birdie,” Kim said without mentioning that she drove to the green on a par-4 hole.

Seavers added that Kim’s 3-under-par score is a program best for a nine-hole effort. Previously, four players posted a 2-under-par rounds for nine holes – Smith’s 32 on a par-34 last year at Southern Dunes, a 33 on a par-35 by Erinn Sutton at Shadowood Golf Course, a 34 on par-36 by Taylor Gohn at Harrison Lake Country Club and a 34 on a par-36 by Sydney Anderson also at Harrison Lake.

“Danbi is playing great,” Seavers said. “She isn’t making any mistakes, and she is taking advantage of opportunities when they are there. She is playing with a lot of confidence.”

Kim, who has been medalist in five of six events so far this season, attributed her general success to hard work.

“I practice almost every day with my dad at Otter Creek,” she said. “Sometimes, it is four or five hours at a time.”

Meredith McCreary paced Batesville with a 37.

Columbus North returns to action at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday (Aug. 16) against Roncalli at Smock Golf Course in Indianapolis. The Bull Dogs’ JV follows with a dual meet at 4:30 p.m. Thursday (Aug. 17) against Jennings County at St. Anne’s Golf Course.
