Kim cited as MVP of 2017 Columbus North girls golf team

Senior Danbi Kim was recognized as MVP of the 2017 Columbus North girls’ golf team at the squad’s season-ending gathering Wednesday evening (Oct. 25).

The MVP honor was presented to Kim after she averaged 74.27 strokes for 11 18-hole rounds, 36.45 in 11 nine-hole rounds and placed fifth individually at the 2017 IHSAA State Finals. It was the second consecutive season that Kim was fifth in the IHSAA state meet.

Kim also set one school record and tied another. She fired a 4-under-par 33 on Aug. 28 at Shadowood Golf Course, the best to-par score in program annals. She also shot a 32 on Aug. 15 at Hillcrest Country Club to tie the best raw score set a year earlier by then-senior Aubrey Smith at Southern Dunes.

Seniors Julia Luken and Molly Donnell were named co-winners of the team’s Bull Dog Award. Luken averaged 81.54 in 18-hole rounds and 40.64 in nine-hole rounds. Donnell had respective norms of 83.89 and 42.09.

Junior Alexandria Munnicha was presented the Consistency Award and also was honored for having the team’s highest grade-point average, while sophomore Nicole Duncan was recognized with the Most Improved Award. Munnicha averaged 79.67 in 18-hole rounds and 38.44 in nine-hole rounds. Duncan averaged 47.00 in nine nine-hole rounds.

Luken was captain for the Bull Dogs, who posted a 12-0 mark in two- and three-team meets as well as placing fourth as a team in the State Finals. CN also won the Conference Indiana championship, the Greensburg Sectional and the Roncalli Invitational. Nathaly Munnicha was medalist in the sectional, while Kim was medalist in the Fall Preview, Fuzzy Zoeller Invitational and Roncalli Invitational. Also, Donnell was medalist in the Greensburg Invitational.

In addition, the Bull Dogs were second as a team in Bloomington South Invitational, the Fall Preview, the Fuzzy Zoeller Invitational and the Lapel Regional. CN also was third in the Hall of Fame and Franklin Central invitationals.

At the end of the season, Kim was chosen to the all-state team by the Indiana High School Golf Coaches Association for the second straight year. During the season, Kim, Luken, Alex Munnicha, Nathaly Munnicha and Donnell earned spots as first-team all-Conference Indiana players.

Eight athletes were awarded varsity letters. They included seniors Molly Donnell, Danbi Kim and Julia Luken; junior Alexandria Munnicha, sophomores Annie Anderson and Nicole Duncan; and freshmen Nathaly Munnicha and Yestika Nischol.

Those recognized as JV team members were freshmen Anna Hatton and Paige Sherlock.
