Girls Varsity Soccer
FRANKLIN, Ind. – Columbus North broke the ice with a Franklin “own” goal in the 42nd minute Saturday (Sept. 30), and the Bull Dogs went on to post a 4-1 victory in girls soccer.
Junior Tanner Johnson tallied twice and senior Kristen Orben scored once for the Bull Dogs, who completed their regular season with a 9-3-2 record. Senior Liz Tynan played the full game in goal, making three saves.
After a scoreless first half, junior Elise Whitley launched a corner kick in the 42nd minute and a Lady Cubs player ultimately knocked the ball into her own goal to give CN a 1-0 lead.
Orben doubled the Bull Dogs’ advantage with an unassisted goal in the 50th minute, but Franklin senior Charlie Kinney made it 2-1 by finding the net in the 64th minute.
Johnson ended any suspense with a pair of unassisted tallies in the 71st and 72nd minutes, causing Lady Cubs sophomore Alexandria Bedard to be pulled from the net after making six saves but allowing four goals in 73 minutes. Sophomore Mackenzie Brown played the final seven minutes in goal for the Lady Cubs (4-11-0).
In the JV game, sophomore Hannah Grimes, freshman Helena Ho and sophomore Abigail Hovis each scored to give the Bull Dogs a 3-0 decision. Sophomore Alayne Davis added an assist, while sophomore Kaylyn Bates made one save while recording the shutout. The Bull Dogs’ JV team concluded its season at 4-8-1.
Columbus North returns to action at 7 p.m. Tuesday (Oct. 3) when it faces Greenwood in the first round of the Columbus East Sectional at Richard Wigh Soccer Complex. Whiteland and Center Grove meet in the first game that night at 5 p.m.
First-round winners play in the first semifinal at 5 p.m. Thursday (Oct. 5). Franklin and Columbus East square off in the second semifinal about 7 p.m. Thursday (Oct. 5). The sectional final is at 7 p.m. Saturday (Oct. 7).
