Girls Varsity Soccer
COLUMBUS, Ind. – Junior Tanner Johnson scored two goals Saturday night (Oct. 7), leading the Columbus North girls soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Columbus East for the championship of the Class 3A sectional hosted by Columbus East.
The Bull Dogs improved to 12-3-2 with the victory and earned a spot against Floyd Central (12-3-3) in the Bloomington South Regional at 10 a.m. next Saturday (Oct. 14). Castle (16-2-1) and Bloomington South (16-2-1) will play in the second semifinal game. The regional final will be at 7 p.m. Saturday (Oct. 14).
In the sectional final at Richard Wigh Soccer Complex, delayed at halftime for nearly an hour because of lightning, Johnson put Columbus North on the scoreboard when she converted a feed from senior Corrine Orben in the 46th minute.
Johnson tallied an insurance goal in the 78th minute as the Bull Dogs captured the program’s second consecutive sectional crown and its 15th overall since the IHSAA began overseeing girls soccer in 1994.
CN senior Liz Tynan made six saves to record her second shutout of the sectional and sixth of the season in the triumph.
Columbus East finished its season at 11-6-2.
The Bull Dogs will be seeking their second consecutive regional title and the program’s 11th since 1994 when they travel to Bloomington South.
Floyd Central reached the regional after being credited with a 1-0 decision over New Albany in the Floyd Central Sectional. The teams were scoreless through regulation and two seven-minute overtime periods. The Highlander advanced by outscoring the Bulldogs 6-5 in a penalty-kick shootout.
Castle qualified for the regional by beating Evansville Central 4-0 in its sectional final.
