Columbus North wins Bloomington South Regional in girls soccer; Bull Dogs post 1-0 decisions over Floyd C. and Bloomington S.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Freshman Lauryn Whitley scored in the eighth minute and senior goalkeeper Liz Tynan recorded her fourth consecutive shutout Saturday evening (Oct. 14), propelling the Columbus North girls soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Bloomington South for the championship of the Bloomington South Regional.

Senior Kristen Orben tallied an assist for the Bull Dogs, who improved to 14-3-2 and earned a spot in the southern semi-state next Saturday (Oct. 21) against the Guerin Catholic (15-1-1). The Golden Eagles beat East Central 3-0 in the Zionsville Regional final. The time and site, either Lawrenceburg or Evansville, for the semi-state game will be announced on Sunday (Oct. 15) by the IHSAA.

Columbus North captured its second consecutive regional title and the program’s 11th since the IHSAA began overseeing soccer 1994.

Whitley put Columbus North on the board from fairly close range by converting a feed from Orben with 32:08 showing on the first-half clock. Sophomore Caroline Hollenkamp put two additional shots on goal during the half for the Bull Dogs, but it was Tynan and the CN defense that effectively controlled the rest of the game.

Bloomington South (17-3-1) managed just two good first-half chances, both in the 37th minute by junior Sejal Rajamani and sophomore Gaelle Wells. But neither was able to find the net.

In the 59th minute, Columbus North was called for a handball in the penalty area, resulting in a penalty kick by Panthers senior Emma Mullen. However, Mullen’s attempt from the 12-yard stripe was inches right of the goal.

Tynan made a pair of nice plays late in the game as the CN defense repeatedly cleared the ball as often as it could. In the 67th minute, freshman Torie Stebbins served a corner kick that Wells deflected toward the goal with Tynan making her only official save of the game. Then in the 75th minute, the Panthers lofted another corner kick where Tynan went up to grab the ball before any damage could be done.

In the semifinal round, junior Tanner Johnson scored in the eighth minute to lift Columbus North to a 1-0 victory over Floyd Central. CN put four shots on goal to just one by Highlanders (11-4-3). Bull Dogs senior Liz Tynan made one save to record her third consecutive shutout.

In the second semifinal, Bloomington South defeated Castle 2-0. The Knights finished 16-3-1.

Columbus North is seeking its second semi-state title in girls soccer. The Bull Dogs previously claimed a semi-state crown in 2010. Guerin Catholic is in the semi-state for the fourth time after winning regionals in 2008, 2009 and 2010. It also has won one semi-state, also in 2010. The Bull Dogs beat Guerin Catholic 2-1 in PKs in a state semifinal game that season. South Bend St. Joseph edged Columbus North 1-0 in the 2010 state title game.
