Guerin Catholic tops Columbus North 4-1 in girls soccer semi-state; Bull Dogs finish 14-4-2

LAWRENCEBURG, Ind. – Junior Baleigh Drum provided a second-half goal, but it was not enough Saturday (Oct. 21) as the Columbus North girls soccer team dropped a 4-1 decision to Guerin Catholic in the Class 3A southern semi-state at Lawrenceburg High School.

The Golden Eagles improved to 16-1-1 with the victory and moved into next week’s Class 3A state championship game against Penn (22-0-1), the 2016 Class 2A champ that was credited with a 2-1 triumph over Noblesville after the teams played to a 1-1 draw and the Kingsmen outscored the Miller 5-4 in a penalty-kick shootout.

Columbus North finished its season 14-4-2.

The Bull Dogs warded off the Guerin Catholic attack for much of the first half before senior Elle Vuotto flipped a header into the left corner of the net in the 25th minute off a cross from freshman Quincy McMahon.

Six minutes later, Vuotto struck again. She converted a shot from just inside the 18-yard penalty area after a McMahon cross was deflected and settled in a spot away from all the defenders.

CN junior Tanner Johnson had a chance to score in the 43rd minute, but her volley from about 40 yards away and Guerin Catholic senior goalkeeper Claire Gavin out of the net curled left of the goal.

Drum took a long through-pass from Johnson in the 54th minute and was able to slip a shot under Gavin and into the net. The Bull Dogs then pushed multiple players forward to try for a possible equalizer, but the Golden Eagles got numbers on a counter attack and senior Cassidy Lindley got the ball past CN senior goalkeeper Liz Tynan in the 70th minute.

CN continued to push forward, and Guerin Catholic capitalized on another counter attack. This time, junior Kelsie Smith took advantage of an uncovered opportunity to find the net.

Tynan finished with 10 saves, while Gavin was credited with just one as the Golden Eagles totaled 14 shots on goal to the Bull Dogs’ two.

Columbus North was seeking its second semi-state title in girls’ soccer. The Bull Dogs previously claimed a semi-state crown in 2010 and finished as state runner-up that year, the final season of a non-class soccer tournament.
