COLUMBUS, Ind. -- Senior Ian Smith scored an unassisted goal in the 51st minute Thursday (Aug. 27), leading the Class 2A No. 10 Cathedral boys soccer team to a 1-0 victory over 2A No. 14 Columbus North at Richard Wigh Soccer Complex.
Smith's goal came from the center of the field just inside the penalty area.
Senior P.J. Garcia made seven saves in posting the shutout for the Irish (2-0).
Columbus North (1-1-1) moved the ball well and had several chances, but they were unable to get anything past Garcia. Cathedral, meanwhile, did not have as many chances, but Smith was able to beat CN senior goalkeeper Ty Bentham for the decisive tally.
The Bull Dogs to a 2-0 decision in the JV game. Junior Sam LaVelle and sophomore Kaemon Jiles scored for CN (2-0-1) in that contest.
Columbus North returns to action on Saturday (Aug. 27) when it faces Columbus East in the annual quadruple-header at the Wigh Complex. The JV boys begin at 2 p.m., and the JV girls follow about 4 p.m. The varsity boys are set for 6 p.m., and the varsity girls are scheduled for 8 p.m.
