INDIANAPOLIS -- Senior Mason Shaffer scored just before the half Friday evening (Sept. 11), lifting the Class 2A No. 18 Columbus North boys soccer team to a 1-1 tie with Lawrence North in the Great Midwest Classic at North Central.
The Bull Dogs moved to 3-2-3 with the result, while the Wildcats are now 2-1-4.
Lawrence North opened the scoring on a goal by junior Samson Stohler. But Columbus North was able to draw even just before half. Sophomore Rico Hollenkamp began the play with a corner kick. Shaffer made a run to the ball, and the ball ricocheted off hit chest and into the net.
Senior Ty Bentham played the entire game in goal for Columbus North. He made five saves.
On the other end, the Bull Dogs put nine shots on goal but only one into the goal.
In other first-round games in the tournament, Class 2A No. 3 Avon tied Cincinnati Moeller 1-1, Class 2A No. 2 Fort Wayne Canterbury defeated Columbus (Ohio) St. Francis de Sales 4-0 and Class 2A No. 17 host North Central knocked of Downers Grove (Ill.) South 3-2.
Columbus North returns to action at 5 p.m. Saturday (Sept. 12) when it faces Avon (3-1-2) in its final game of the Great Midwest Classic. CN follows by hosting Perry Meridian on Thursday (Sept. 17) at Richard Wigh Soccer Complex in a Conference Indiana East Division encounter.
