INDIANAPOLIS -- Senior Logan Hatter scored two goals and junior Carlos Mendez added one Saturday evening (Sept. 12), lifting Class 2A No. 3 Avon to a 3-0 victory over 2A No. 18 Columbus North in the Great Midwest Classic at North Central.
Hatter's first goal gave the Orioles (7-2-2) a lead in the game's seventh minute. Mendez made it 2-0 in the 19th minute, an advantage that Avon carried into the half despite getting outshot 7-3 over the first 40 minutes.
Hatter extended the Avon lead to 3-0 in the 57th minute, and Columbus North was unable to get any balls past the Orioles' Sam Pirino. The junior goalkeeper made nine saves, seven in the first half and two in the second.
Senior Ty Bentham made three saves in the game's first 62 minutes for Columbus North. Junior Mark Salle-Tabor did not face a shot on goal over the final 18 minutes.
The Bull Dogs (3-3-3) went 0-1-1 in the tournament, including a 1-1 tie with Lawrence North 1-1 on Friday. Avon went 1-1-1 in the event. The Orioles tied Cincinnati Moeller 1-1 on Friday and lost to 2A No. 2 Fort Wayne Canterbury 1-0 on Saturday morning before playing Columbus North in the evening.
Columbus North returns to action on Thursday (Sept. 17) when it host Perry Meridian in a key Conference Indiana East Division match at Richard Wigh Soccer Complex. The JV game begins at 6 p.m., and the varsity follows about 7:30 p.m.
