COLUMBUS, Ind. -- Junior Nick Beales scored in the seventh minute and seniors Ty Bentham and Preston Grimes shared a shutout Thursday evening (Sept. 17), leading the Columbus North boys soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Perry Meridian at Richard Wigh Soccer Complex.
Beales goal came off a pass from senior Sam Snider and lifted the Bull Dogs to 4-3-3 overall and 2-1 in Conference Indiana East Division play.
Columbus North, Perry Meridian and Southport all finished 2-1 in the East Division, but Southport is third based on goals allowed. CN then takes first and Perry Meridian second based on the Bull Dogs' head-to-head win over the Falcons. Franklin Central finished fourth in the division at 0-3.
Bloomington South won the West Division at 3-0 followed by Bloomington North at 2-1, Terre Haute North at 1-2 and Terre Haute South at 0-3.
In CN's win over Perry, Bentham made one save over the first 40 minutes in goal while Grimes notched three saves over the final 40 minutes.
Columbus North finished with five shots on goal, with Falcons goalkeeper Trevor Byrd making four saves.
At the JV level, freshman Bart Leonarski and sophomore Todd Liggett each tallied a goal and an assist as the Bull Dogs prevailed 4-0. Sophomore Andrew Potter and freshman Michael Gonzales also scored goals, while sophomore Finn Anderson collected an assist. Junior Mark Salle-Tabor earned shutout in goal.
CN returns to action on Saturday when it visits Center Grove in a non-conference game. The JV game begins at 11 a.m., and the varsity game will follow about 12:30 p.m.
