GREENWOOD, Ind. -- Freshman Alex McGill scored two goals Saturday (Sept. 19) to propel the unranked Columbus North boys soccer team to a 2-1 upset of Class 2A No. 6 Center Grove.
McGill's first goal came in the game's 10th minute after he and Center Grove goalkeeper Logan Wade collided in the penalty area. McGill was awarded a penalty kick, and he converted from the 12-yard stripe.
The Trojans tied the game shortly thereafter when senior Brian Wheeler launched a corner kick that ended up in the net behind CN senior keeper Ty Bentham.
McGill provided the game winner in the 21st minute. Sophomore Rico Hollenkamp created the opportunity and passed to McGill, who dribbled twice and then put a shot past Wade.
Bentham recorded three saves while playing the first 40 minutes in goal for the Bull Dogs (5-3-3). Senior Preston Grimes played the second half and made three additional saves as the Trojans fell to 10-2-2.
Center Grove won the JV game 4-1. Junior Sam LaVelle scored the only goal for the Bull Dogs.
Columbus North returns to action on Tuesday (Sept. 22) when it hosts Bloomington South at Richard Wigh Soccer Complex. The JV game is set for 6 p.m., and the varsity game will follow about 7:30 p.m. CN follows by competing in the Conference Indiana Tournament next Saturday (Sept. 26) at Karst Park in Bloomington.
