Boys Varsity Soccer
Two football players and one athlete each in men's soccer and men's cross country/track are to take part in a signing ceremony that is set for 3:30 p.m. Wednesday (Feb. 3) in the Columbus North athletic conference room.
Student-athletes set to sign are football players Alex Algee (University of Indianapolis) and Drew Schoeberl (Columbia University), soccer player Ty Bentham (Fredonia State, N.Y.) and runner Ben Rankin (Grace College).
>> Ty Bentham, soccer, Fredonia State (N.Y.): Bentham, a goalkeeper, posted a 1.15 goals against average in helping the Bull Dogs to a 7-7-3 record last fall. That came after a junior season where he notched a 0.42 GAA when Columbus North went 14-4-2. Bentham joins a Blue Devils' program that went 3-12-3 while competing at the NCAA Division III level.
>> Ben Rankin, cross country/track, Grace College: Rankin was selected the Columbus North most valuable athlete in cross country last fall after placing 49th at the IHSAA state meet with a time of 16 minutes, 10.4 seconds. He also was fifth last spring in the 1,600 meters in the Connersville Regional in 4:37.74. Rankin joins a Lancers' program that placed eighth last fall in the Crossroads League cross country meet.
>> Drew Schoeberl, football, Columbia University (N.Y.): The 6-5, 250-pound Schoeberl was a strong blocker and caught eight passes for 70 yards while playing tight end. He also doubled as a defensive end, where he netted 37 tackles with a team-high eight TFLs, three sacks, one hurry, one PBU and two fumble recoveries. He could play either spot or move to offensive line in college. Schoeberl joins a Lions' program that went 2-8 last season, including a 1-6 mark in the Ivy League.
