Boys Varsity Soccer
Sophomore Alex McGill and junior Rico Hollenkamp were recognized as co-MVPs for the 2016 Columbus North boys soccer team Sunday evening (Nov. 13) at the team’s season-ending gathering.
McGill totaled 45 points on 20 goals and five assists in helping the Bull Dogs to a 15-6-1 season that included a sectional championship and runner-up finish in the Conference Indiana Tournament. Hollenkamp added 22 points on six goals and 10 assists to share the team’s top award.
Others cited during the program were senior Jeremias Dela Cruz, senior Zach Green, sophomore Zack Friend, senior Nick Beales, junior Jannis Anderson, senior Ian Hussey, junior Andrew Potter and senior Cameron Phillips.
Dela Cruz was recognized as winner of the Bull Dog Award, while Green was presented the most improved awards. Friend was presented with the David Green Spirit of the Game Award and was honored with the ISCA Top Team Award.
Dela Cruz produced 18 shots and nine shots on goal while also defending well, while Green amassed a 1.01 goals against average with 46 saves in 21 games as a goalkeeper. Friend was a defensive anchor for a unit that allowed just 24 goals in 22 games.
Earlier, McGill, Hollenkamp and Beales were voted first-team all-Conference Indiana while Jannis Anderson, Friend and Hussey were selected honorable mention all-conference. Beales totaled 13 points on five goals and three assists, while Hussey had five points on two goals and one assist. Jannis Anderson, another defender, scored one goal during the season.
Also, Hussey and Jannis Anderson were chosen first-team all-District 5 while McGill and Hollenkamp were picked second-team all-District 5 by the ISCA.
In addition, Jannis Anderson, Hollenkamp, Hussey, Phillips and Potter were recognized for their selection as Academic All-State athletes by the ISCA.
Varsity letters were awarded to seniors Nick Beales, Jeremias Dela Cruz, Zach Green, Ian Hussey, Kaemon Jiles, Sam LaVelle, Jake Osborne, Cameron Phillips, Mark Salle-Tabor, Daniel Viana and Vinicius Viana; juniors Finn Anderson, Jannis Anderson, Axel Arroyo, Rico Hollenkamp, Andrew Potter and Jack Robertson; sophomores Drew Cvelbar, Zack Friend and Alex McGill; and freshmen Andrew Goble and Graham Keele.
Recognized as JV players were juniors Brenden Agnew, Kotaro Hashizume, Miguel Juarez, Nicholas Stevens and Kyler Wheeler; sophomores Omar Bailon-Avila, Damien Daugherty, Victor Hernandez, Israel Jamies, Noah Kestler, Anthony Mendez, Juan Fernando Perez, Massimo Sanchez-Lara, Cameron Swan and Frasier Swan; and freshmen Saad Azeem, Jaime Dominguez, Gabriel Hernandez, Evan Logan, Rogan O’Connor and Luis Perez.
