Southport edges Columbus North 2-1 in boys soccer season opener

COLUMBUS, Ind. – Sophomore Albert Thang and senior Dawt Thang each scored in the first eight minutes on Saturday (Aug. 17), leading the Southport boys soccer team to a 2-1 season-opening victory over Columbus North at Richard Wigh Soccer Complex.

Senior Graham Keele scored on a penalty kick in the 45th minute for the Bull Dogs in a contest that was interrupted by a 97-minute lighting delay.

Albert Thang opened the scoring in the seventh minute of the Conference Indiana encounter when he collected the rebound of a shot by junior Rodrigo Romero at about the 6-yard mark, then pushed the ball past CN junior goalkeeper Colvin Iorio into the right corner of the goal.

In the eighth minute, Dawt Thang took a long pass from Albert Thang, tapped the ball to get past the only remaining defender and then pushed the ball into the net from about 4 yards out.

With 3:02 remaining in the first half, the game was stopped because of lightning in the area. After a delay stretching beyond an hour and half, action resumed to complete the first half and continue with the second half.

In the fourth minute of the second half, Southport committed a foul in the penalty area. After the ball was set, Keele put the ensuing penalty kick into the lower left corner of the net.

Columbus North had a free kick in the final minute where it pushed everyone including Iorio forward. A Southport player blocked the kick and Dawt Thang gathered in the ricochet and converted an apparent open-goal net at the other end. But the Southport player was ruled to have stepped too close to the ball when defending the free kick. So the goal was negated and the Bull Dogs received one more restart opportunity with 48 seconds showing on the clock.

This time, the Cardinals thwarted the CN attempt to hold on to the one-goal decision.

Iorio finished with 11 saves for Columbus North.

In the JV game, sophomore Langh Khai scored in the 44th minute to lift Southport to a 1-0 triumph. The goal came on a rebound opportunity, and CN freshman goalkeeper Lukas Iorio had no chance to stop the shot. Lukas Iorio made 11 saves for the Bull Dogs in the JV game.

Columbus North returns to action on Thursday (Aug. 22) when it hosts Bloomington North in another Conference Indiana match at the Wigh Complex. The JV game begins at 6 p.m., and the varsity game follows at about 7:30 p.m.
