Bull Dogs seek to step forward in Glover's return as boys' soccer coach

It looks to be a season of transition for Columbus North boys’ soccer in 2020.

With Andy Glover returning for his first season in a second stint as head coach, the Bull Dogs hope to step forward after posting a 7-10-1 record that included a 3-2-0 Conference Indiana slate a year ago.

“For me, all things look positive and we are taking strides in the right direction,” said Glover, who guided the program to a 133-37-22 ledger over nine seasons from 2009 through 2017. “In uncertain times, we are doing the best we can to recalibrate expectations.”

Fifteen players from last season’s varsity return. That group includes senior goalkeeper Colvin Iorio, junior Nathan White, senior Sam Larken, sophomore Anthony Johnson, junior Will Holliday and junior Jesse Williams.

Iorio posted a 1.88 goals against average in 1,358 minutes in goal, while White figures to move from the back line to a forward position with an ability to fire laser-rocket shots. Larken is a versatile player, while Johnson, Holliday and Williams each played significant minutes last time.

Other returnees include seniors Ricardo Navarro, Jesus Hernandez, Ben LaVelle, Mauricio Brito, junior Jacob Gilliam and sophomores Nathan Imlay, Flynn Keele, Trent Liggett and Mateo Mendez. JV veterans are senior Jorge Avila plus sophomores Colvin Iorio and Eduardo Cordova.

In addition, freshmen Aidan Whitley, Ian Jackson, Christian Cardoso, Nico Gotoh and Misaki Takemoto look to make an impact.

“We look to have a balanced team where we will play a lot of players,” Glover said. “Some things are pretty fluid right now, and we have a number of things to sort out.”

Nevertheless, the coach expresses confidence in the freshman group and what they will bring. He is hopeful of another run similar to his earlier tenure that produced four conference titles, seven sectional trophies, five regional crowns and three semi-state championships in addition to the state title.

“The ceiling is high over the next three to five years,” Glover said. “I am incredibly encouraged by the group as a whole, although we are working to address issues with climate and culture. Guys are working hard, and putting in the work has been a focal point for us.

“For this season, we are taking things one day at a time, and we want the team and its individuals to perform in the 95th percentile or higher all the time. That takes a lot of discipline and is difficult to do, but so far, our players are trying to do so.”

Columbus North opens its season at 11:30 a.m. Saturday (Aug. 15) with a CI game against Southport at Mary Bryan Elementary School in Indianapolis. The Bull Dogs then visit Bloomington North at 7:30 p.m. next Thursday (Aug. 20) with the home opener set against Avon at 7:30 p.m. next Saturday (Aug. 22).

The annual rivalry game will be Aug. 27 against Columbus East, while Center Grove visits on Sept. 1 and Carmel visits on Sept. 11. Other conference games are Sept. 5 at Terre Haute South, Sept. 19 against Terre Haute North and Sept. 22 at Bloomington South.

Ultimately, Glover wants this team to be playing its best at season’s end.

“We’re working on shape and how we use our skills individually during our training,” he said. “We’re trying to get those things correct now, so we can shift to more team-based details when we get to the latter part of the season.”
