Columbus North tops 3A No. 18 Southport 3-1 in boys soccer opener

INDIANAPOLIS – Junior Jesse Williams scored a goal and added an assist Saturday (Aug. 15), leading the Columbus North boys soccer team to a season-opening 3-1 victory over Class 3A No. 18 Southport at Mary Bryan Elementary School.

Freshman Aidan Whitley and senior Jesus Hernandez also provided goals for the Bull Dogs, who took an early lead in the Conference Indiana standings with the decision. Senior Colvin Iorio played the full 80 minutes in goal, making 12 saves while yielding one goal in the 60th minute.

Columbus North went up 1-0 in the eighth minute when Whitley outjumped the Southport keeper to a ball in the air, heading it into the net from about 8 yards away. Junior Alex Ruiz-Cordova set up the goal, lifting a pass from the left end line, and Whitley finished the play.

Williams scored what proved to be the game winner in the 29th minute on an unassisted goal. He received the ball near the center of the penalty area, eluded a defender and then tapped the ball past the Cardinals’ keeper.

Junior Albert Thang scored from about 20 yards out midway through the second half to give the hosts a chance. However, Hernandez closed the door for the Bull Dogs in the 75th minute when he scored from about 6 yards out. Williams set up the final goal, winning the ball near midfield and dribbling from the right side toward the middle before passing to Hernandez.

Columbus North totaled 14 shots with nine shots on goal. Southport countered with 18 shots and 13 shots on goal.

In the JV game, sophomore Oscar Ballinas and freshman Marco Figueroa each scored a first-half goal as the Bull Dogs prevailed 2-0. Freshman Misaki Takemoto assisted on Figueroa’s goal, while freshman goalkeeper Dylan Diaz made 13 saves en route to posting a shutout.

Columbus North returns to action on Thursday (Aug. 20) when it visits Bloomington North in another Conference Indiana encounter. The JV game begins at 6 p.m., and the varsity follows at about 7:30 p.m.
