Columbus North, Bloomington North play to 3-3 tie in boys soccer

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Columbus North sophomore Nathan Imlay scored a go-ahead goal in the 77th minute on Thursday evening (Aug. 20), but Bloomington North junior Sandro Smith countered with a penalty-kick goal a minute later and the teams played to a 3-3 draw.

Junior Jesse Williams produced a goal and an assist for the visiting Bull Dogs, who are now 1-0-1 overall and in Conference Indiana play. Junior Nathan White also scored for CN, while freshman Aidan Whitley and senior Jacob Gilliam contributed assists.

The Cougars jumped to a 2-0 in the game’s opening 30 minutes. Senior Thomas Burns opened the scoring in the eighth minute, finishing a cross by senior Ian Holtz-Hazeltine. The hosts made it 2-0 in the 29 th minute when Smith converted a penalty kick after Imlay was issued a yellow card in the penalty area.

Williams cut the Bull Dogs’ deficit in half before intermission. Whitley started the play by stealing the ball about 35 yards out. He then moved the ball forward and passed to Williams, who found the net from about 11 yards out in the 35th minute.

White made it 2-2 in the 48th minute. Williams created the opportunity with a cross from the left side of the box, and White one-touched the ball from 6 yards away on the back side.

Columbus North went ahead in the 77th minute when freshman Ian Jackson’s shot on goal was stopped. Gilliam collected the rebound and passed to Imlay, who slid the ball into the net from 4 yards out.

The lead was short lived, however. Sophomore Flynn Keele was called for a yellow card in the penalty area, resulting in another Bloomington North penalty kick. Smith converted this one as well, despite CN senior goalkeeper Colvin Iorio getting a hand on the ball.

The Bull Dogs totaled 16 shots and six shots on goal. Bloomington North tallied 17 shots and 10 shots on goal. Iorio finished with seven saves.

In the JV game, freshman Marco Figueroa produced a hat trick as the Bull Dogs prevailed 6-3. Freshman Isaiah Munn, sophomore Michael Wolf and sophomore Oscar Ballinas also scored for CN, while freshman David Chen tallied an assist as CN improved to 2-0-0. Freshman Dylan Diaz made four saves while yielding two goals in 65 minutes in the nets. Freshman Christopher Perez allowed one goal in five minutes in the nets.

Columbus North will observe Senior Night on Saturday (Aug. 22) when it hosts Avon at Richard Wigh Soccer Complex. The JV game begins at 6 p.m., and the varsity follows at 7:30 p.m. Seniors to be recognized between games are Iorio, Gilliam, Jorge Avila, Mauricio Brito, Jesus Hernandez, Sam Larken, Ben LaVelle and Ricardo Navarro.
