Boys Varsity Soccer
COLUMBUS, Ind. – Junior Carson Holmer found the net in the 66th minute Saturday evening (Aug. 22), lifting the Avon boys soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Columbus North at Richard Wigh Soccer Complex.
The decision spoiled Senior Night for the Bull Dogs, who fell to 1-1-1 for the season. The start of the game was delayed awhile because of lightning that stopped the JV game.
Seniors recognized in a ceremony between games were Jorge Avila, Mauricio Brito, Jacob Gilliam, Jesus Hernandez, Colvin Iorio, Sam Larken, Ben LaVelle and Ricardo Navarro.
The game was scoreless through the entire first half and for more than half of the second half. But with about 14 minutes remaining Holmer picked up a loose ball from a scrum about 9 yards out on the left side of the goal. From there, he hit a shot past the diving Iorio and into the net.
For the game, Avon totaled 17 shots and 10 shots on goal. Columbus North countered with 14 shots but just one shot on goal. Freshman Ian Jackson had CN’s only shot on goal. Iorio played the entire game in goal for the Bull Dogs, making nine saves.
At the JV level, the visiting Orioles claimed a 1-0 decision in a game stopped at halftime because of lightning. Sophomore Omar Chemmaoui scored for Avon off an assist from freshman Samuel Clore in the eighth minute. Sophomore Lukas Iorio made four saves in 35 minutes in the nets for the Bull Dogs (2-1-0).
Columbus North returns to action on Thursday (Aug. 27) when it faces Columbus East back at the Wigh Complex. The JV game begins at 6 p.m., and the varsity follows at 7:30 p.m.
