Bull Dogs, Olympians play to 1-1 draw in boys soccer

COLUMBUS, Ind. – Freshman Christian Cordosa gave the Columbus North boys soccer team a lead with a header Thursday evening (Aug. 27), but the Bull Dogs were unable to hold onto the advantage and played to a 1-1 draw with rival Columbus East.

Olympians junior Chris Quisenberry countered Cordosa’s goal with one of his own in the late going to account for the final score at Richard Wigh Soccer Complex.

After a scoreless first half, Cordosa found the net off a Columbus North restart in the 69th minute. The ball was lofted from the deep left to freshman Aidan Whitley, who crossed the ball toward the back post. Cordosa was there, and he headed the ball into the net.

East, ranked 18th in Class 3A, drew even in the 79th minute. A Bull Dogs’ foul gave Quisenberry a free-kick opportunity from about 23 yards out, and he placed the ball into the upper-right corner of the goal to produce the deadlock.

The Olympians totaled 13 shots and seven shots on goal while moving to 2-1-2. The Bull Dogs countered with 16 shots but just three shots on goal while moving to 1-1-2.

Columbus North senior Colvin Iorio played all 80 minutes in goal, making six saves.

At the JV level, freshman Marco Figueroa scored in the 56th minute to lift the Bull Dogs to a 2-1 victory.

Columbus North struck first on an East own goal that followed a corner kick by CN junior Nico Fragante in the 19th minute. The Olympians drew even in the 50th minute when freshman Micah Corya finished a play set up by junior Dathan Wolf. But then Figueroa provided the game winner when he gathered the ball near his own penalty area, made a long run with the ball and then lofted a shot from about 40 yards out into the net.

Sophomore Lukas Iorio played the first half in goal with one save. Freshman Dylan Diaz played the second half in goal, also making one save. The Bull Dogs’ JV improved to 3-1-0.

Columbus North returns to action on Tuesday (Sept. 1) when it hosts Class 3A No. 9 Center Grove at the Wigh Complex. The JV game begins at 6 p.m., and the varsity follows at about 7:30 p.m.
