COLUMBUS, Ind. – Senior Jesus Hernandez scored in the second half and classmate Colvin Iorio recorded a shutout Thursday evening (Sept. 3), leading the Columbus North boys soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Franklin Central at Max Andress Field.
Hernandez’s found the net in the 47th minute from about 11 yards out after a Bull Dogs’ corner kick. The set piece resulted in a scrum in the middle of the field and when the ball bounced free, Hernandez fired a shot that ricocheted off a Flashes’ defender and into the goal.
Iorio, meanwhile, made 12 saves on the other end in earning his first shutout of the season as Columbus North improved to 2-1-3.
The visiting Flashes fell to 3-4-0 despite totaling 23 shots, including 12 shots on goal. Columbus North countered with eight shots and three shots on goal. Junior Jesse Williams and sophomore Nathan Imlay joined Hernandez in producing the Bull Dogs’ shots on goal.
In the JV game, sophomore Michael Wolf gave the Bull Dogs a lead with a second-half goal, but Flashes junior Juan Boyzo tied the game a few minutes later and the contest ended in a 1-1 draw. Freshman Marco Figueroa assisted on Wolf’s goal. Sophomore Lukas Iorio made four saves in the nets in the first half, while freshman Christopher Perez allowed one goal and made four saves in the second half for CN (3-2-1).
