SEYMOUR, Ind. – Freshman Christian Cardoso provided three goals and an assist on Tuesday (Oct. 6), keying the Columbus North boys soccer team to a 10-0 rout of Jennings County in the first round of the Seymour Sectional.
Freshman Aidan Whitley and junior Nathan White each added two goals for the Bull Dogs, who improved to 7-5-4 and advanced into the semifinal round against Columbus East (7-2-7) at about 7 p.m. Wednesday (Oct. 7). The Olympians defeated New Albany 1-0 in the second game on Tuesday.
In Columbus North’s victory, junior Jesse Williams, freshman Marco Figueroa and sophomore Mateo Mendez also found the net for the Bull Dogs. Mendez, senior Sam Larken, sophomore Flynn Keele, freshman Nico Gotoh and freshman Misaki Takemoto also tallied assists for the winners.
Senior Colvin Iorio played the first 22 minutes while sophomore Lukas Iorio played the final 58 minutes in sharing the shutout. Neither goalkeeper had to make any saves.
For the game, Columbus North totaled 44 shots and 24 shots on goal. The Panthers (4-12-2) countered with two shots but no shots on goal.
Whitley scored the game’s first two goals, the first in the second minute from 38 yards away and the second in the 10th minute, tapping in a lob into the penalty area by Mendez. Williams made it 3-0 with a second goal in the 10th minute by finishing a feed from Larken, and Williams converted a Keele corner kick in the 13th minute.
White scored in the 19th minute, Cardoso found the net off a feed from Gotoh in the 29th minute and Figueroa scored in the 32nd minute off a through pass from Cardoso for a 7-0 advantage at intermission.
Mendez scored an unassisted goal from 17 yards out in the 42nd minute, and Cardoso headed in a Takemoto cross in the 45th minute. Cardoso completed his hat trick in the 73rd minute.
Floyd Central (12-4-1) faces Jeffersonville (9-3-0) at 5 p.m. in the first semifinal on Wednesday. Columbus North and Columbus East, which reached the semifinals on a goal by Chris Quisenberry in the 50th minute against New Albany, play the second game. The semifinal winners return for the sectional final at 7 p.m. Saturday (Oct. 10).
