Whitley recognized as MVP of 2020 Columbus North boys soccer

                Freshman Aidan Whitley was recognized as most valuable player for the 2020 Columbus North boys soccer team, it was announced on Tuesday (Dec. 1).

                Whitley, a freshman midfielder, produced a team-best 25 points with a team-high 10 goals plus five assists in leading the Bull Dogs to a 7-6-4 season that included a Conference Indiana championship at 3-1-1.

                Others receiving team awards included sophomore Anthony Johnson, senior Jesus Hernandez, sophomore Mateo Mendez and sophomore Eduardo Ruiz-Cordova.

                Johnson was the winner of the Bull Dog Award, while Hernandez received the David Green “Spirit of the Game” Award. Mendez was recognized as the Bull Dogs’ Top Team Player by the Indiana Soccer Coaches Association, and Ruiz-Cordova was feted as the team’s Most Improved Player.

                Johnson, a sophomore midfielder, tallied 16 shots and one shot on goal while providing strong play in the center of the field. Hernandez, a defender and forward, netted four points on two goals, including a game-winning goal against Franklin Central. Mendez, a sophomore midfielder, tallied eight points on three goals with two assists. Ruiz-Cordova, a sophomore defender, helped the Bull Dogs’ back line allow just 23 goals over 17 games.

                Earlier, Whitley, senior Jorge Avila and senior Colvin Iorio were voted first-team all-Conference Indiana. In addition, freshman Ian Jackson, junior Nathan White and junior Jesse Williams were cited as honorable mention all-Conference Indiana.

                Avila was a primary defender in Columbus North’s stout defense. Iorio, the team’s goalkeeper, posted a 1.42 goals against average with three shutouts in 1,295 minutes in the nets. Jackson, a midfielder, totaled four points on one goal and four assists. White, a forward, provided 23 points on eight goals and a team-best seven assists. Williams, a forward, tallied 14 points on six goals and two assists.

                Varsity letters were awarded to seniors Jorge Avila, Mauricio Brito, Jacob Gilliam, Jesus Hernandez, Colvin Iorio, Sam Larken, Ben LaVelle and Ricardo Navarro; juniors Will Holliday, Alex Ruiz-Cordova, Nathan White and Jesse Williams; sophomores Nathan Imlay, Lukas Iorio, Anthony Johnson, Flynn Keele, Trent Liggett, Mateo Mendez and Eduardo Ruiz-Cordova; and freshmen Christian Cordoso, Pavit Dhillon, Marco Figueroa, Nico Gotoh, Ian Jackson, Misaki Takemoto and Aidan Whitley.

                Recognized as JV players were junior Nico Fragante; sophomores Oscar Ballinas and Michael Wolf; and freshmen Derek Arau, Ary Arroyo, Ryan Beck, David Chen, Dylan Diaz, Sam Loheide, Carlos Mejia, Isaiah Munn, Raul Oliveira, Christopher Perez and Jack Warble.
