CN's McQueen, two relays earn spots in boys swimming consolation finals at state meet

                INDIANAPOLIS – Senior Chase McQueen qualified for the consolation final in the 200-yard individual medley and two Columbus North relays also earned spots for Day 2 on Friday (Feb. 26) during the preliminary round of the IHSAA boys swimming State Finals.

                McQueen posted a time of 1 minute, 54.69 seconds in the IM, the No. 13 time in the round and earning a shot to swim in a race on Saturday (Feb. 27) that will determine places 9 through 16.

                McQueen also swam legs on the 200 free relay and 400 free relay that earned respective seeds of 13th and 15th for the consolation finals. Sophomore Adam Zhuang, junior Angel Torres Martinez and senior Jared Imlay were part of the 200 free relay that was clocked in 1:27.19. Torres Martinez, freshman Jared Carroll and Imlay joined McQueen in posting a 3:12.67 mark in the 400 free relay.

                McQueen also swam the 100 free, but he did not make the finals in that event after qualifying 18th in 47.57.

                Torres Martinez competed in the 50 free. He also did not advance, qualifying 27th in 22.11.

                The highlight of the meet was a swim by Avon senior Chandler Bray, who set a national and state-meet record of 52.65 in the 100 breaststroke. His time bettered the national mark of 52.92 set by Jacob Molacek of Omaha (Neb.) Creighton Prep in 2014. Bray’s time also eclipsed the state mark of 53.19 set by by Ian Finnerty of Bloominton South in 2015. Cody Taylor, a Columbus North graduate, had set a state mark of 54.24 in the event in 2014.

                Columbus North junior Kaemon Jiles will be part of the Bull Frog contingent on Saturday. He compete in diving preliminaries at 9 a.m. Diving semifinals follow at 11 a.m., and then the diving finals will be a part of the swimming finals that begin at 1 p.m.
