King, Morlok pace Bull Frogs in preliminary round of CN girls swimming sectional

                COLUMBUS, Ind. – Sophomores Betsy King and Olivia Morlok each posted a pair of runner-up efforts Thursday evening (Feb. 1) in the preliminary round of the girls swimming sectional at Columbus North.

                King was clocked in 25.01 seconds in the 50-yard freestyle and in 54.64 in the 100 free as the Bull Frogs qualified 21 athlete spots and three relays in the top 16.

                Morlok was second-fastest in the 200 free in 2:02.19 and in the 500 free in 5:17.58, while sophomore Erica Samuel was third in the 500 free in 5:34.55.

                Freshman Riddhi Garg, King, junior Rachel Gutman and Morlok posted the No. 2 time of 1:43.24 in the 200 free relay, a team season best. Morlok, Samuel, senior Kaitlyn Niebrugge and King were second in the 400 free relay in 3:49.79.

                Sophomore Caroline Swenson was fifth in the 100 breaststroke in a team season-best of 1:11.93. Also, Niebrugge was sixth in the 200 individual medley in a team season-best of 2:22.05. Niebrugge, Swenson, sophomore Karlie Brown and Garg were fourth in the 200 medley relay in a team season-best of 1:57.74.

                Bloomington South’s Mackenzie Looze and Julia Wolf each was the fast qualifier in two events.

Looze was No. 1 in the 200 IM (2:11.11) and 100 breast (1:08.20), while Wolf was tops in the 50 free (24.20) and the 100 free (53.48). The Panthers’ Phoebe Rensink was the fastest in the 100 butterfly (59.09), while Bloomington South had the No. 1 quartet in the 200 medley relay (1:50.48) and the 400 free relay (3:47.69).

                Trinity Lutheran’s Rachel Sabotin was the fast qualifier in the 200 free (1:56.95) and 500 free (5:09.79), while East Central’s Kyra Hall was No. 1 in the 100 backstroke (1:08.44) and an East Central foursome led the qualifiers in the 200 free relay (1:43.08).

                The sectional finals are Saturday (Feb. 3) in the Charles “Chick” Newell Natatorium. Diving begins at 9 a.m. The swimming finals start at 1 p.m. Event winners and those meeting the state standard in each event earn spots in the IHSAA State Finals on Feb. 9-10 at the Natatorium at IUPUI.

                100 butterfly: 1. Phoebe Rensink (BS) 59.09; 7. Karlie Brown (CN) 1:04.49; 9. Adeline Rush (CN) 1:04.72.

                100 freestyle: 1. Julia Wolf (BS) 53.48; 2. Betsy King (CN) 54.64; 7. Riddhi Garg (CN) 58.11; 8. Hannah Manlief (CN) 58.47.
