INDIANAPOLIS – Junior Olivia Morlok qualified for the championship final in one event and the consolation final in another Friday evening (Feb. 8), highlighting the effort by the Columbus North girls swimming team in the preliminary round of the IHSAA State Finals at the Natatorium at IUPUI.
Morlok qualified eighth in the 500-yard freestyle in 5 minutes, 0.83 seconds, earning the chance to swim for a state title. She also qualified 15th in the 200 free in 1:53.72, and she will compete with seven others for a final placement between ninth place and 16th place.
Junior Betsy King competed in two events in the prelimaries. She placed 18th in the 100 free in 52.24, and she was 19th in the 50 free in 24.21. Junior Erica Samuel also swam in the 500 prelims, placing 24th in 5:12.87.
The foursome of King, sophomore Riddhi Garg, Samuel and Morlok took part in the 200 free relay prelims. They finished 28th in 1:42.81.
Neither King, Samuel nor the relay earned a spot in the finals.

Carmel is seeking its 33rd consecutive team state championship in girls swimming.
The finals on Saturday (Feb. 9) will begin at 1 p.m. back at IUPUI.
