Lee places ninth in 100 back, 11th in 50 free; 400 free relay is 14th, 200 free relay is 15th; team places 23rd at state

INDIANAPOLIS – Senior Christopher Lee placed ninth in the 100-yard backstroke and 11th in the 50-yard freestyle on Saturday (Feb. 27), leading Columbus North to a 23rd-place finish in the IHSAA boys Swimming State Finals.

The Bull Frogs finished with 25 points to account for their team finish.

Carmel won the team championship with 360 points. Fishers was runner-up with 198.5 points followed by Zionsville with 189.5, Franklin with 169, Penn with 154 and Hamilton Southeastern with 125. Rounding out the top 10 teams were Chesterton with 122 points, Center Grove with 90, Homestead with 75 and Brownsburg with 72.5.

The championship is the seventh in a row and the 21st overall in boys swimming for the Greyhounds. Columbus High/Columbus North is second in boys swimming team state titles with 10, its last in 1999-2000.

Lee was timed in 50.81 seconds in the 100 back and was clocked in 21.18 seconds in the 50 free. His placements were similar to the placements he posted as a junior in the same two events in the 2020 state meet when he was ninth in the 100 back and 10th in the 50 free.

The Bull Frogs also posted a 14th-place finish in the 400 free play in 3:13.36 and a 15th-place finish in the 200 free relay in 1:28.20. Sophomore Daniel Utterback, Lee, junior Carlos Fabian Aguilar and junior David Fry combined for the 400 free relay. Utterback, Fry, junior Matthew Goble and senior Aidan McAlister teamed for the 200 free relay.

A day earlier, Utterback took part in the preliminary round of the 200 free and 100 free. However, he did not qualify for the final day in either event. Also, the Columbus North 200 medley relay took part in prelims but did not advance to the final day.

Utterback’s times were 1:44.91 in the 200 free and 47.34 in the 100 free. The foursome of Lee, sophomore Pratt Badve, Fry and Goble were clocked in 1:38.20 in the 200 medley relay.

Columbus North/Columbus High was seeking to place in the top 20 of the team standings in the IHSAA boys swimming State Finals for the 58th time in program history. However, it fell just shy of that objective with its 23rd-place finish.
