Boys Varsity Track & Field
Lou Sipe has stepped down as coach of the Columbus North boys track and girls track teams.
In eight seasons as head coach of the boys, the Bull Dogs went 42-10 in two- and three-team meets, placed second in three Conference Indiana meets, third in five CI meets, won two sectional championships and placed second in six sectionals.
In six seasons as head coach of the girls, CN went 27-11 in two- and three-team meets, won one Conference Indiana crown, twice placed third in the conference, captured one sectional championship and three times were sectional runner-up.
“The move is for family purposes,” said Sipe, who is moving to the Cincinnati area and will be a physical education teacher in 2019-2020 at East Central High School in St. Leon, Ind. “I enjoyed my time at Columbus North, and I am sure the athletes there will continue to do good things.”
Sipe, a graduate of Peru High School and Anderson University, came to Columbus North in 2008-09. He was an assistant track coach for throws for three years before becoming the boys track head coach in the 2011-12 school year. He added duties as girls track head coach in the 2013-14 school year.
Sipe also served as a Bull Dogs’ assistant football coach for six seasons. He was at Columbus North as a teacher for 11 years and worked in the physical education department the entire time.
CN’s boys track sectional championships came in 2014 and 2018 during his tenure and they were runner-up his other six seasons. The Bull Dog girls captured the 2014 conference championship, and they were sectional runners-up in 2015, 2017 and 2019.
Sipe said he is uncertain whether he will coach at East Central, but he is open to the idea if things can fit together. Initially, though, Sipe, his wife Abby and their sons Daniel (9), David (7) and Benjamin (5) have to get settled in their new home and school settings.
“I want to try to continue to coach, perhaps as an assistant coach or maybe as a head coach,” he said. “For now, we have to transition to our new situation and see where it leads.”
