Boys soccer opens season with decisive victory

August 13, 2023 - Misaki Takemoto had a pair of goals and an assist, Nico Gotoh had two goals, and Aiden Whitley recorded a pair of assists as Columbus North opened its boys soccer season with a 7-1 victory over Conference Indiana foe Southport. Takemoto scored in the 11th minute off of a Whitley assist, then Christian Cardoso scored four minutes later with an assist from Takemoto. Takemoto added his second goal in the 18th minute off of an assist by Derek Arau. Nico Gotoh scored the next two goals for North, once in the 22nd minute off a Mathiang Kak assist, and then in the 31st minute from Whitley’s second assist of the match. A late first-half goal by Southport cut the Bull Dog lead to 5-1 at the half. Obed Oliva opened the second half scoring with a 55th minute goal (Brian Rodriguez assist), and then Kak scored a goal (Arau assist) in the 63rd minute to complete the 7-1 scoring margin. The Bull Dogs fired 20 shots for the game, including ten on goal. Southport had only ten shots with five being on goal. Juan Jose Salcedo Calderon played all 80 minutes in goal and recorded four saves for the Dogs. The Dogs will travel to Lawrence North on Tuesday. JV is scheduled to begin at 6:00 pm with the varsity to follow.
