Boys soccer shuts out Southport to open season

August 14, 2022 - The Columbus North boys soccer team opened their season on the road at Conference Indiana foe Southport and came away with a 5-0 victory. Christian Cardoso put the Dogs on the board with a goal in the 36th minute, assisted by Alejandro Alvarez. Nine minutes later, Aidan Whitley pounded in a rebound from a shot by Anthony Johnson and the Dogs were up 2-0. Alvarez scored a goal of his own with an assist from Cardoso, Flynn Keele had an unassisted goal in the 78th minute, and Misaki Takemoto scored on a penalty kick in the 79th minute to seal the victory. Goal Keepers Oscar Ballinas and Max Grewe combined for the shutout. North outshot Southport 25-4, including a 15-0 shots-on-goal advantage. The JV team also grabbed a season-opening victory 2-1 over the Cardinals. Justin Hernandez Galindo had a goal (assisted by Derek Arau) and Jonny Garcia added a penalty kick goal. Both teams will have their first home games on Tuesday, August 16 as they host Lawrence North at the BCSC Soccer Complex. The JV is scheduled to get underway at 6:00 pm, with the varsity to follow around 7:30.
