September 12, 2023 - Trailing 1-0 at the half, the seventh-ranked boys soccer team from Columbus rallied to tie the match in the 47th minute as Christian Cardoso knocked home an assist from Aidan Whitley. The Dogs then took the lead in the 76th minute as Thomas Delacruz had a free kick that went to Whitley. Whitley’s shot was initially blocked by East Central’s goalkeeper, but he was able to put back the rebound for a 2-1 lead that eventually became the final score of the match. One key sequence in the match happened in the middle of the second half when goalkeeper Juan Jose Salcedo Calderon was issued a yellow card, forcing him to leave the field temporarily. Midfielder Sam Brown was then forced to play goalkeeper in Salcedo Calderon’s absence and made a diving stop on an East Central free kick, preserving the 1-1 tie and allowing the Bull Dogs to eventually take the lead and the victory. Salcedo Calderon recorded four saves in his 76 minutes in goal as each team tallied 14 shots on goal. The JV squad opened the evening with a 3-1 victory. The Bull Dogs (7-2-2) will travel to Terre Haute North in a Conference Indiana match on Saturday. JV will play at noon with varsity scheduled for 1:30.
