Boys soccer blitzes Greenwood 7-1 in Sectional tournament

October 4, 2023 - Through 23 minutes of the Columbus North boys soccer Sectional match between Columbus North and Greenwood, the score was tied 1-1. Sam Brown had scored for North in the ninth minute off an Aidan Whitley assist, with the Woodmen answering to even the match. However, the rest of the match was all Bull Dogs as North rolled to a 7-1 victory and a spot in the Sectional semifinals against Franklin. The Grizzly Cubs advanced with 1-0 victory over Columbus East in the early match Tuesday evening. Whitley scored an unassisted goal of his own in the 34th minute, and Madux Tovey put a ball in the net three minutes later to give the Bull Dogs a 3-1 halftime advantage. Misaki Takemoto netted an unassisted goal in the 48th minute, followed five minutes later by an Obed Oliva goal to put the Dogs up 5-1. Tovey then completed a hat trick with two more goals, one in the 58th minute assisted by Takemoto, and an unassisted one in the 80th minute to give North the 7-1 victory. Juan Jose Salcedo Calderon carried the bulk of the goalkeeping work for the Bull Dogs, recording a pair of saves and giving up one goal in 66 minutes. Noah Marsh was in goal the last 14 minutes and did not face a shot. The Dogs pummeled the Woodmen goalkeeper with a 34-4 shot advantage, including a 19-3 advantage in shots on goal. The Bull Dogs and Grizzly Cubs will meet in the second game of Wednesday’s Sectional doubleheader at the BCSC Soccer Complex. Roncalli and Franklin Central will face off in the 6:00 match, with the winners of the two matches to meet Saturday afternoon at 2:00 for the Sectional championship.
