October 14, 2023 - Columbus North beat Floyd Central in boys soccer to defend its Regional title on Saturday afternoon at Bloomington South High School, and will advance to face Cathedral in the Semi-state Championship match on October 21. Cathedral advanced with a 2-1 victory over Carmel in their Regional finals. After a 0-0 halftime score, Aidan Whitley (shown) scored two second-half goals, both assisted by Nico Gotoh to advance the Dogs in the IHSAA Boys Soccer Championships. Whitley scored with just over eleven minutes to play and then again with 2:30 left to secure the Bull Dog victory. The Dogs were out-shot by the Highlanders 15-13, but put more shots on-frame (9-8). Juan Jose Salcedo Calderon played all eighty minutes in goal and recorded five saves. Adian Espejel, Konnor Gribbins, and Leo Iorio were credited with the remaining three saves. The Bull Dogs and Cathedral have met once already this season, with Cathedral edging the Bull Dogs 2-1 at Cathedral on August 31. That was the Bull Dogs’ (14-3-3) first defeat of the season.
