Bull Dogs third at wrestling sectional, advance ten to regionals

January 27, 2024 - Columbus North wrestling had ten wrestlers place in the top four in their weight class to advance to the Jeffersonville Regional and lead the Bull Dogs to a third-place finish in the 13-team IHSAA Jennings County Sectional on Saturday (January 27). Sectional champions for the Bull Dogs included Justice Thornton (28-1) at 138 pounds, Asher Ratliff (32-2) at 157 pounds, and Keller DeSpain (11-2) at 175 pounds. Placing second in their weight class included North’s Cohen Long (25-8) at 132 pounds, and Jose Ramirez (9-4) in the 190-pound weight class. Third-place finishers included Luke Spurgeon (12-4) at 150 pounds, and Evan Saevre (21-9) at 165 pounds. Rounding out the list of regional-qualifiers for the Dogs included Nolan Riley (17-5) at 106 pounds, Josiah Green (25-12) at 144 pounds, and Alex Lozano (25-9) at 285 pounds, who each finished fourth in their respective weight classes. Also competing for Columbus North at the Jennings County Sectional were Liam Curfman (19-14), who finished sixth at 113 pounds, and Jonathan Morales (13-21), who was sixth at 215 pounds. Columbus East won the team sectional championship with 223 points, followed by Franklin Community (193.5), Columbus North (190), and Switzerland County (130) in the 13-team competition. The Jeffersonville Regional will be held on Saturday, February 3, beginning at 9:00 am. Photo: Sophomore Asher Ratliff claimed the 157-pound sectional wrestling championship, leading the Bull Dogs to a third-place finish at the Jennings County Sectional. Ratliff and nine other Bull Dogs will advance to the Jeffersonville Regional on Saturday, February 3.
