May 29, 2024 - Senior boys soccer player Christian Cardoso has been awarded the Dr. Maurice McKain Mental Attitude Award, and senior girls tennis player Kathryn Wilson has been named as the Josephine Armuth Mental Attitude Award recipient for the 2023-2024 school year. These awards are presented annually to a senior male and senior female athlete, nominated by varsity coaches for exhibiting exemplary sportsmanship, mental attitude, and scholarship throughout their academic and athletic careers at Columbus North High School. Dr. Maurice McKain was a local physician who served for many years as the team doctor and athletic trainer for Columbus High School in the 1930s. An award in his honor has been given since 1940. Josephine Armuth was a long-time local educator who gave years of dedicated service to Columbus High School students. The award in her honor has been given since 1974. Cardoso was nominated by head boys soccer coach Andy Glover for “displaying leadership qualities that have been second to none.” Glover continued, “Christian has proven to be a dependable young man who has high expectations of himself and teammates. (His) leadership has been reflected in the team’s performance, reaching a State Final and a Final Four in his tenure. His attendance was almost perfect over four years while maintaining two jobs and a robust academic schedule. Christian has a very high level of integrity and wears a smile when things get difficult.” Cardoso plans to attend and play soccer at Indiana University Columbus in the fall. Wilson, who will be playing tennis at Purdue University beginning in the fall, was nominated by head tennis coach Kendal Hammel. “Kathryn is a wonderful young girl with so much ahead of her. You could not ask for a better role model, team leader, competitor, and humble person. Academically she has a 3.98 GPA and is very well-liked by her classmates and peers. She has been a multisport varsity player with passion for what she does.” Hammel also described Wilson as “very well-respected by competitors, other coaches, and teammates. She sets a high standard as a person and a player. She would be a wonderful selection for this award because of who she is, her actions, and her personal character traits.” Wilson will attempt to defend her IHSAA Individual Singles State Championship this month. Columbus North Athletics is proud to announce Christian Cardoso as the 2024 Dr. Maurice McKain Mental Attitude Award winner and Kathryn Wilson as the 2024 Josephine Armuth Mental Attitude Award winner. Congratulations to both recipients.
