January 13, 2023 - Each time it looked like the Bull Dogs boys basketball team was going to pull away from visiting Mooresville, the Pioneers would make a run and cut into the Columbus North lead. Coming out of a timeout with about four minutes to play, Tyler Blythe nailed a huge three-point goal to give the Dogs a four-point lead and they held on to win 58-53, improving to 9-5 for the season. The Dogs led 9-8 after a quarter and 23-15 at the half before Mooresville put 17 points on the board in the third quarter, cutting North’s lead to just 35-32 after three quarters. Cooper Horn led all scorers with 22 points with a number of athletic drives to the basket throughout the game. Ty Ferguson added 15 and Blythe chipped in eleven as the dogs held off the Pioneers (7-7) for the non-conference victory. North swept the early games as well, winning the JV game 42-34 and the freshman game 54-38. Max Coomes led the JV (10-1) scoring with ten points and Sam Perry paced the freshmen (12-1) with 13 points. The JV and varsity teams will host Roncalli on Tuesday, January 17, beginning at 6:00 pm.
