January 27, 2023 - Only one night after Lauren Barker became the twelfth player in Columbus North girls basketball program history to reach 1000 career points, senior Cooper Horn joined ten other members of the 1000 career point club in the boys program. Horn entered the Conference Indiana matchup with Southport 27 points shy of the 1000-point mark. A layup late in the fourth quarter of the 51-44 loss to the Cardinals put Horn at 28 points for the game and 1001 for his career. Horn is the first boys player to tally 1000 career points since 2001 graduate Blake Barker, Lauren’s older brother. Blake Barker finished his Bull Dog career with 1388 points, putting him second behind Josh Speidel’s 1512 on the all-time scoring list. Horn now trails 2007 graduate Bobby Hayes by just four points for tenth place on the all-time list. The Cardinals (12-5) dominated the first quarter, outscoring the Bull Dogs 16-5. The Cardinals consistently beat the Dogs back in transition in the early going, scoring on numerous fast-break opportunities. Meanwhile, there appeared to be a lid on North’s basket for much of the first stanza. The Bull Dogs (11-6, 1-2) maintained their composure and outscored the Cardinals 39-35 the rest of the way, but the rally fell just short as the Cardinals proved to be too long and too athletic for the undersized Bull Dogs. Horn’s 28 points led all scorers. Ty Ferguson added eight points, including a pair of three-pointers in the fourth quarter that helped keep the pressure on the Cardinals. The JV team fell to 12-2 for the season with a 48-38 loss in one of the two 6:00 games. Max Coomes led North with 15 points. The freshmen beat the Cardinals 29-21 to improve to 14-2. Brock Kintner paced the Dogs with eleven points, and Mason Acton added nine. The freshman team will be on the road at Bloomington South on Monday (January 30) before all three teams travel to East Central on Saturday, February 4 for an afternoon matchup. JV and freshmen will begin at 1:00, with varsity to follow approximately 2:30 Photo: Senior Cooper Horn celebrates with his teammates moments after a 28-point game against Southport pushed his career point total past the 1000-point barrier. Horn now sits at 1001 points for his career. The Dogs fell 51-44 to Southport in the Conference Indiana matchup.
