April 7, 2023 - After an emotional 3-3 tie against top-ranked Roncalli, Ron McDonald’s softball team had to regroup quickly for the challenge of a road matchup at Shelbyville on Thursday evening. McDonald’s squad scored the game’s only run in the top of the seventh inning with an RBI double by Kaylee Cowan, improving the Bull Dogs to 2-0-1 for the young season. Freshman Payton Morris got her first career pitching start for the Bull Dogs. She struck out five, walked three, and gave up only three hits before handing the ball off to Maddi Rutan after five solid innings. Rutan gave up only one hit and struck out four while collecting the victory as the pitcher of record when the Dogs scored the winning run. Hits were difficult to earn for both teams in the defensive game. The Bull Dogs had only three, singles by Kirsten Danford and Morris, and the double by Cowan. The Bears were only able to muster four hits in the shut-out loss. The Dogs will host Whiteland Monday evening with first pitch set for 5:30 pm at the Southside diamonds.
