May 25, 2025 - Columbus North softball will face Columbus East in the second round of the East Central sectional on Wednesday, May 28, but the Dogs were careful not to look ahead to that rematch as they finished their final two regular season games on Thursday and Friday (May 22, 23). Following an emotional victory at Terre Haute South on Wednesday, securing the Bull Dogs a share of the Conference Indiana title, North hosted Jennings County on Thursday. The program’s three seniors, Summer Williams, Lily Retz, and Destiny Allman, were recognized prior to the first pitch of an 8-1 victory. The Dogs got on the board in the bottom of the first when Morgan Jarvis slapped one of her three hits to start the inning, eventually scoring on a Payton Morris RBI. Morris pounded a solo home run in the fourth inning to help put the Dogs up 4-0. Retz then ripped a two-run shot in the fifth inning as part of a four-run inning that gave the Dogs an 8-0 lead. The Panthers put a harmless run on the board in the top of the seventh inning, but it was too little, too late as the Dogs held on for the 8-1 victory. Morris had possibly her best pitching outing of the season as well. She scattered just three hits and one run while striking out 13 and walking just one. Her only blemish was the solo home run allowed in the top of the seventh. The Dogs were back on the diamond for the third straight night at Silver Creek on Friday. The Dogs held an 8-6 lead heading to the bottom of the seventh inning when the Dragons scored three runs in the bottom half of the final inning to take a 9-8 victory. Morris started in the circle and tossed the first three innings. She allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits, walking two and striking out two. She then turned the ball over to Bailee Scruggs who pitched the rest of the game. Scruggs allowed seven runs, but only three were earned thanks to defensive miscues by the Bull Dogs. She walked three and struck out two while allowing seven hits. Miley McClellan had three hits to lead the Dogs, and North got two hits each from Jarvis, Morris, and Scruggs. McClellan and Retz each had two RBI for the Dogs, who finished the regular season with a 13-11 record. North’s JV lost both games against Jennings County and Silver Creek. The Columbus North versus Columbus East rematch on Wednesday will begin at 6:00 pm. Franklin Community will face Monday’s East Central vs Whiteland winner in the other semifinal. The championship game will begin at 6:00 pm on Thursday, May 29 at East Central. Photo: Payton Morris tossed a complete game three hitter and hit a solo home run against Jennings County on May 22.
