Panthers slip by Bull Dogs in varsity baseball

May 11, 2023 - Columbus North overcame a two-run deficit in the top of the seventh inning to tie the game 5-5 heading into the home half of the inning. Bloomington South, however, answered with a one-out RBI single in the bottom of the inning to win the game 6-5 and secure the Conference Indiana title. Connor Hensley started on the mound for the Bull Dogs and threw four and two-thirds innings before being relieved by Joey Fry in the fifth. Hensley gave up five runs on eight hits, while walking four and striking out three. Fry struck out two and gave up three hits, including the game-ender in the seventh. Zach McLean was 3-for-4 from the plate for North (12-9, 2-2). Trenton McCain and Dillon James each had a pair of hits for the Dogs. One of James’ hits was a two-run home run in the top of the third inning to put the Bull Dogs up 2-1. In the JV game at Columbus North, the Bull Dogs improved to 13-2 overall (3-0 in Conference Indiana) with a 9-5 victory over Bloomington South. The Panthers scored five runs in a big second inning, but the Dogs held them scoreless the rest of the way. Dillon Long threw six innings in the victory, allowing five runs on nine hits. Long struck out three and walked two in his outing. Jayce Emmitt threw a perfect seventh inning to preserve the victory for North. Macario Mendez was three-for-three and scored four runs for the Columbus North offense. The JV team will travel across town this afternoon (May 11) for a 5:00 game versus Columbus East.
