May 21, 2023 - Columbus North beat Chesterton 11-3 in the early game of the Greyhound Invitational in Carmel on Saturday before losing to fifth-ranked Cathedral 10-4 in the championship game. The Bull Dogs finished their regular season, Mike Bodart’s first as North’s head coach, with a 15-10 record. In the morning game, Conner Hensley threw the first five innings allowing just one run on four hits before handing the ball off to Joey Fry to finish the game’s last two innings. Fry allowed a pair of runs (one of them earned) on three hits. Zach McLean, Fry, and Luke Harmon all had a pair of hits for the Bull Dogs. One of McLean’s hits was a homerun over the left field wall as part of a seven-run fourth inning that blew open a close game. Cathedral advanced to the championship game with an early-game victory over host school Carmel. The Bull Dogs sent Harmon to the mound in the championship game. He lasted five innings, giving up three runs on four hits, walking three and striking out three. Harmon left with a 3-0 deficit, but the Dogs came back with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Irish scored three more in the top of the sixth, but once again North battled back with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the sixth to cut the deficit to just 6-4. However, a four-run seventh inning for Cathedral sealed the victory for the fifth-ranked Irish. Zach McLean pitched the sixth inning, giving up four runs (two unearned) on two hits. Ryan Rayburn pitched the seventh inning, giving up three runs (one earned) for the Bull Dogs. Four Columbus North defensive errors proved costly for the Bull Dogs, who hope to clean things up heading into sectional play this week. Kyler Hashmas had three hits, and Harmon added two for the Bull Dog offense. The Bull Dogs will face Franklin Community (13-13-1) in the late game on Friday, May 26 after drawing a first-round bye for the East Central Sectional.
